SOME CEMETERIES OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC
SOME CEMETERIES OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC,
by Marie Gulledge Wiggins, illustrated by Rebecca R. Wilde. Many genealogical
resources are collaborative efforts. The reissuing of SOME CEMETERIES certainly
falls within that category. Marie Gulledge Wiggins, the patriarch of
Chesterfield County genealogy worked for nearly a decade gathering information
from the cemeteries of the burned county in an effort to preserve the county's
history. Wiggins wrote in her forward:
The bulk of this work appears to be the pages of inscriptions taken from the cemeteries of small country churches with which Chesterfield County abounds, but I believe the real value lies in the numerous little family plots - old, forgotten, and all too often very nearly inaccessible! Many of these plots are falling into ruin, and will not be there for another generation to copy. Some have already disappeared with only a neighboring old-timer to tell how they were plowed under, vandalized or otherwise destroyed. There are even a few of these little plots graced with only wooden crosses long since gone to dust, or homemade stones with crude lettering, tombstones often being [beyond] the reach of many of the poorer tenant farmers of Chesterfield County.
Wiggins published this survey (from a typewritten copy) in 1983 and for well over a decade it has been out-of-print. With Wiggins' death in 2001 the genealogical community lost a tireless advocate for Chesterfield County genealogy. Wiggins' daughters, as a tribute to their mother, decided to reissue SOME CEMETERIES. James C. and Julie Pigg volunteered to retype the book into a computer format to make reproduction easier and the Old Darlington District Chapter, SCGS agreed to publish SOME CEMETERIES. This reprint contains all the original material and illustrations, with the addition of an Introduction by James C. Pigg. This edition will become an "armchair classic" among those with Chesterfield County ancestry. © 1983, Library of Congress Number- 2001095538, 340 pages, soft cover, full name index, illustrations Price- $30.00 plus $4.00 shipping and handling.
