Spring 1997

The Darlington Flag Newsletter

1870 Federal Census, Chesterfield County, SC, compiled by James C. Pigg.  Researchers
who have used the 1870 Census recognized the problems with it.  For some reason the
writing is usually of poor quality and the enumerators often had the bad habit of using
initials instead of first names.  While nothing can be done about the first problem, Jim
Pigg has helped Chesterfield researchers by compiling the information from the white
households of Chesterfield County.  Listed on each page of this compilation are the
household number, the last and first names, the age, sex, race, occupation, real estate
value, personal property value, and the state of birth for each white resident of the
county.  Those who were married within the last year and those with various afflictions
are also noted.  It is hoped that Jim Pigg will continue to shed light on Chesterfield (a
burned county) by publishing additional materials.  143 pages, 1997, soft cover,
  surname index. Price:
$25.00 plus $4.00 shipping for first book and $1.50 for each
  additional book.
